The recently presented quarterly crime statistics report to the parliament’s portfolio committee on police has unveiled some alarming trends for the period between 1 January and 31 March 2023. It is with deep concern that we share the following updates:
– 6 289 people were murdered between January and March 2023, an increase of 3.4% compared to the same period in 2022.
– 969 women were murdered, and 1 485 were victims of attempted murders between January and March 2023.
– 10 512 rape cases and 13 205 sexual offences were reported with the police in the first three months of 2023.
– 245 children were murdered between January and March 2023. That means three children are murdered per day. 360 attempted murders of children were reported during the same time.
These statistics serve as a stark reminder that we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the challenges our nation faces. It is imperative that we come together as a society and work towards finding lasting solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of every South African.
